Nuchal Scan

Nuchal Scan (First Trimester Screening)

The nuchal scan is an ultrasound done in early pregnancy to assess your baby’s growth and to check for early signs of certain conditions. It measures the thickness of a small fluid space at the back of the baby’s neck, called the nuchal translucency.
This scan is usually done together with early pregnancy blood tests to estimate the risk of chromosomal conditions such as Down Syndrome. It also provides reassurance about the baby’s heartbeat, size, and early development.

At Klinik Caring, Impian Emas, our experienced doctors perform nuchal scans with care and precision, explaining every finding in a calm and supportive way.

Why the Nuchal Scan Is Important

The nuchal scan helps to:
  • Confirm that the pregnancy is developing normally
  • Check the baby’s heartbeat and estimate the due date
  • Measure the nuchal translucency to assess the risk of chromosomal conditions such as Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18), and Patau Syndrome (Trisomy 13)
  • Examine early structures such as the brain, spine, limbs, and abdominal wall
  • Detect twin or multiple pregnancies
A thicker nuchal translucency measurement does not mean there is a problem, but it may indicate a higher risk and the need for further testing such as the NICC Test or other genetic assessments.

When the Nuchal Scan Is Done

The scan is performed between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy, when the baby is large enough for accurate measurements. The best time is around 12 to 13 weeks.

How the Scan Is Done

  • The scan is performed through the abdomen using an ultrasound probe.
  • It takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • You may be asked to have a slightly full bladder for clearer images.
  • The doctor measures the baby’s size and the nuchal translucency, and checks for early development.

What to Expect

  • The nuchal scan is completely safe for both mother and baby.
  • No fasting or special preparation is needed.
  • Results are explained immediately after the scan.
  • If the scan is combined with blood tests, results will be ready after both are reviewed.
