Tetanus Vaccination

Tetanus Vaccination During Pregnancy

The tetanus vaccine is an important part of antenatal care. It helps protect both mother and baby from tetanus, a serious infection caused by bacteria that enter the body through cuts or wounds. During childbirth, even a small wound or contaminated environment can expose the mother or newborn to infection.

At Klinik Caring, Impian Emas, we provide tetanus vaccination for pregnant women according to the Ministry of Health Malaysia’s guidelines. This simple and effective vaccine offers long-lasting protection and is safe for both mother and baby.

Why the Tetanus Vaccine Is Important During Pregnancy

Tetanus can be life-threatening, especially for newborns. The bacteria release toxins that affect the nervous system, causing muscle stiffness and spasms. In newborns, this condition is called neonatal tetanus and can occur if the umbilical cord is cut or handled in an unclean environment.
Vaccination during pregnancy:
  • Protects the mother from tetanus infection during delivery
  • Provides antibodies that pass through the placenta to protect the baby
  • Reduces the risk of neonatal tetanus after birth
Receiving the tetanus vaccine during pregnancy is one of the easiest and most effective ways to safeguard both mother and child.

Tetanus Vaccination Schedule During Pregnancy

For the First Pregnancy
Two doses are needed for full protection:
  1. First dose: As soon as pregnancy is confirmed (after 12 weeks)
  2. Second dose: At least four weeks after the first dose
These two doses protect the mother and baby for up to five years.
For the Second and Subsequent Pregnancies
Only one booster dose is needed if the previous vaccination was completed within the last five years.
This booster helps maintain immunity and ensures continued protection for the mother and baby.

Vaccine Type and Safety

The tetanus vaccine used during pregnancy is a Tetanus Toxoid (TT) vaccine or a combined Tdap vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) depending on availability. Both are safe for use in pregnancy.

Safety Information
  • The vaccine does not contain live bacteria, so it cannot cause infection.
  • It is safe to receive during any trimester, though usually recommended after 12 weeks.
  • Common mild side effects include slight soreness at the injection site or mild tiredness, which usually resolve quickly.

What to Expect at Klinik Caring

  • Our doctor will review your vaccination history to determine if you need one or two doses.
  • The injection is given in the upper arm and takes only a few seconds.
  • We will record your vaccination date and provide reminders for the next dose if needed.
  • Your vaccination will also be updated in your Pink Book for documentation.
